Cindy opened PetMAC in 2005 in partnership with Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Prior to PetMAC, Cindy had an on-line business selling all-natural pet foods and supplies, offering local home delivery, which “was a great opportunity to get my feet wet and learn the business without having to invest a lot of money to start.” She got involved in animal rescue 17 years ago and started off showing dogs and cats at the shelter to prospective adopters, before moving on to helping market and promote the animals for the adoption website. In a previous life, Cindy worked in Information Technology, with the American Red Cross, and was a part-time DC tour escort for school groups visiting DC. Cindy is a DC native and graduated from The American University in Washington, DC.
Where are you from originally? I was born at GW Hospital in DC, lived in PG County until I was 8, and then moved to Vienna when my mom got remarried.
What is your fondest memory growing up? Spending time with my dad and going on his boat in the Chesapeake from Sandy Point State Park and catching crabs for dinner.
When/how did you decide to take the plunge into owning your own business? Both of my parents were small business owners. 14 years ago, I was in the IT world and realized it wasn't for me. At the same time, I was highly involved in animal rescue, fostering and coordinating adoption events for the Washington Humane Society. I wanted to do something animal related but being in my 30s, didn't want to spend the time to go to Veterinary school. I had also been learning about the importance of good nutrition from a fellow foster friend, so decided I could help animals live healthier lives, and support myself, by selling good quality pet foods and educating pet parents on the importance of quality ingredients, and how to read labels to really know what's in the foods they are feeding.
What is most important to you? The people in my life. I value my personal relationships greatly. Both of my parents have passed away, as well as my sister who died in a car accident when I was 8, so I realized that we can't take people for granted. No one ever says on their death bed "I wish I had spent more time working". It's always "I wish I had spent more time with my kids, family, etc."
Who inspires you? Angelina Jolie. I love how she turned her life around and is using her fame for good around the world. She has a blended family, not only of ethnicities, but of biological and adopted children. She has a good heart and she's sharing it with the rest of the world
