Meet Maggie Parker, Vice President of Communications and Community Outreach for Comstock Partners, LC.
Early in her career, Maggie Parker was one of the top sales leaders for an international tech company with over 30,000 sales people. She recalls, “I was very fortunate to be in the management program for a Fortune 100 company at a very young age. Over the years I’ve found myself to be one of the few women ‘at the table’; I prefer to view those situations as learning opportunities rather than challenges.”
When/how did you decide to take the plunge into your career?
I re-entered the workforce about ten years ago. Prior to motherhood I’d had a very fulfilling career in high tech sales. I was fortunate to work at home and in the community while my son was in school but was eager to get back in once he was self-sufficient. Communications and business development have always been constants in my life so a role with Comstock as it began to build not one but TWO new neighborhoods was an opportunity of a lifetime.
Where did you grow up/go to school?
I’m not sure I’ve yet grown up, but my formative years were spent in northwestern Connecticut. I went to college in Massachusetts at the College of the Holy Cross.
How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
I think I’m very fortunate to have come from strong leadership stock and to have been encouraged to seize and maximize every opportunity presented. When one is regularly instilled with that type of vigor and expectation, it is easy to feel confident and to push to create those opportunities for oneself. I enjoy leadership roles and thrive in facilitating efforts of others.
What are some highlights and challenges you have faced over your career?
I was very lucky to be one of the top sales leaders for an international tech company with over 30,000 sales people. I was very fortunate to be in the management program for a Fortune 100 company at a very young age, and to have seen most of the United States due to a very heavy travel schedule. Over the years I’ve typically found myself to be one of the few women ‘in the room’ or ‘at the table’; I prefer to view those situations as learning opportunities rather than challenges.
What advice can you offer to women who want a career in your industry?
My first piece of advice would be to ‘come on in’ – the real estate and development industry needs more women! I feel that you can not go wrong by maintaining a sense of humor, being considerate and kind to others, being honest and working hard.
