As my parents celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, so many plans fell right into place! Gathering with friends and family this month, I wanted to give them a special photo shoot that captured their true love and friendship. The candid moments are always my favorite! And when the warm season hasn't allowed for Autumn to begin... paint a few oranges and reds in there!
Nana's Biskitz Dog Treats, LLC is a home based dog treat kitchen bakery and is an independently owned and licensed small business. They specialize in making doggy-licious treats for pups all over the South Riding and Loudoun County, VA area.
Owner, Misty Ocean has a background in Elementary Education and Literacy, and in 2014 decided to add baker and researcher of pet health and healthy pet-friendly recipes to her career/life resume. Her experience with children, teaching, and being a life-long learner flows over the love in her baking for our furry family members!
I had the opportunity to photograph Misty and her assistant, Oreo, at home in her kitchen doing what she loves! She even sent home treats for my pups! They gave 5 paws for the frozen yogurt cups and can not wait until they can help taste test another round!
Where are you located? We are located in Loudoun County – specifically, South Riding, Virginia
When/how did you decide to take the plunge into starting your own business? Taking the plunge was decided after I shared my passion with a complete stranger on Easter 2015. I had shared my hobby and passion for baking all natural treats for our pet, Oreo (and many furry friends) after her diagnosis. I told her about my mom being sick and how I'd love to name a business in her honor. It all came together after she insisted that she wanted to purchase a business license for me...no strings attached, just wanted to help me to begin my vision! What an inspiring angel she was that day and we developed a friendship and kept in touch along the journey.
Tell us more about your business! Baking homemade, healthy treats with no preservatives or artificial ingredients began when our pet was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure at almost age 12 in April 2014. After a few prescriptions for fluid retention around the lungs and heart, prescription cough medication (that we now give half the dosage) for chronic cough, blood pressure meds, and a change in diet to all natural, we have had Oreo with us happily for 17 more months! We have been baking treats since then!
What inspires you? The name Nana's Biskitz, comes from my mom, also known as Nana, and her pup is Biskit! She is battling Leukemia. I wanted to do something special to honor her name and her love for our family and our furry family as well. My dog, Oreo, and my little Max that we had to say goodbye to with many bladder stones and Cushing's disease are also my daily inspiration! I hope to pass down a treat that is healthy and delicious to other local pets and owners! If I can help just one pet overcome an illness and even live longer, it will be worth the 50 or more hours a week I put into making this business what it is!

The date finally arrived... the date this beautiful couple exchanged vows, rings, smiles, and kisses with their family and friends!
Pej and Victoria were so full of energy greeting everyone with hugs, happiness and love on their wedding day. I have never seen such a happy bride!
This beautiful bride's smile was infectious and really made my job a lot easier throughout the day! The gorgeous flowers in pinks, blushes and jeweled sparkles, plus the special details carefully chosen to frame the stage told their story of unity.
The groom's face said it all when he saw her for the first time! Add the perfect hair and makeup, a dewy faced bride and her amazing beaded wedding dress and this love story writes itself!
I was so honored to witness this union... another beautiful wedding to add to my favorite memories! I could not imagine two sweeter people uniting on this beautiful Spring day!
When Julia and I spoke on the phone about her upcoming wedding, I knew we would become fast friends! Her enthusiasm and excitement about all the planning was infectious, and I am so blessed to have met this lovely couple! We met for an impromptu engagement session and caught the blossoms at their peak!
This amazing couple were such a joy to be around! I had the pleasure of meeting up with Victoria and Pej at Meadowlark Gardens... Spring has been struggling to arrive this year, but these two brought some bright and beautiful smiles to fill the gardens! Their love was overflowing with laughter and fun as we wandered throughout the entire garden in search of new blooms. I am looking forward to see them both walk down the aisle in just a few weeks!
The word camera comes from "camera obscura". It is Latin for "dark chamber" and sounds more mysterious than it is. The camera box is literally a dark chamber... what a photographer does with the box is part of the art of it. Photography as we know it has been around for about 170 years, yet the art of capturing an image is thousands of years old. Painting, carvings, and prints of various types are just a few ways history has been able to hold fast and stay relevant for generations.
Photography and the ever evolving science behind it has opened doors to films, television, artist, inventors, entrepreneurs, technology advancements and more. The simple pleasures of photography are just as exciting as the advancements. Capturing a real smile that you can feel true emotion from or a baby's soft skin or a family member's final year is what drives me.
I recently received a beautiful email from a client sharing the news of a family member's passing.
At the time we met, I was focused on the job. Getting the best of a group of funny family members, including goofy teens making each other laugh. I grabbed shots of quick smiles from the older family members, especially the matriarch as she was amused by the younger grandchildren playing on the floor behind me. I had no idea this lovely woman sitting in the midst of several generations of love was actually terminally ill.
The email was so touching, allowing me to feel a part of this family loss. She told me the photos I took would be cherished and I cannot even begin to explain how powerful that word sounds/feels to me. Cherished. I now have a new milestone memory to hold, and I am so glad I was available that particular day for them. It even began to rain about 10 minutes before our appointment and the client had a plan B already in mind using her Christmas tree as a backdrop.
These are the events I want to keep close to my heart and pull out when I need to remember what this is all about! Love; engagements; weddings; new life and even death, all of these are examples of possible memories served and created by the "dark chamber" and my passion for the art of it.
